The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Its position outside the Earth’s atmosphere provides significant advantages over ground-based telescopes — images are not blurred by the atmosphere, there is no background from light scattered by the air, and the Hubble can observe ultra-violet light that is normally absorbed by the ozone layer in observations made from Earth. Since its launch in 1990, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy. With it, astronomers have made many observations leading to breakthroughs in astrophysics. Hubble’s Ultra Deep Field is the most sensitive astronomical optical image ever taken. From its original conception in 1946 until its launch, the project to build a space telescope was beset by delays and budget problems. Immediately after its 1990 launch, it was found that the main mirror suffered from spherical aberration, severely compromising the telescope’s capabilities. However, after a servicing mission in 1993, the telescope was restored to its intended quality and became a vital research tool as well as a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is part of NASA’s Great Observatories series, with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.[1] Hubble is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency.

The widest variety of magnification is in the Essential series.

Essential and Sonoma series have variable magnification that goes up to 16x magnification.

The Sonoma series has three models with variable magnification available: the two 8-20x50mm and the 7-21X40mm. 8-24x25mm, 10-30x50mm and 8-20x50mm are available in the Essential series.

The most popular for the sport viewer is the Tasco Essentials 8-24X25 Porro Compact zoom binoculars. This little beauty is a mere 10.3 ounces but there is a lot of power and extras built into it. Like variable zoom, the casing is made of rubber to absorb impacts, is somewhat weather proof because of the rubber casing. But it is not waterproof. The objective lenses are Rubicon coated and the range of view is 212 feet at 1000 yards.

Included of course is the pouch and strap to carry the binoculars.

Another highly recommended binocular is the Bushnell Elite. This is the latest version of the old and much revered Bausch & Lomb Elites. This binoculars series has been completely redesigned to create a new identity when Bausch & Lomb licensed their name to Bushnell in the 1970′s. Bushnell in turn produced all of Bausch & Lomb’s sporting optics. This agreement ended in 2004 at which time Bushnell manufactured under their own name. Bushnell still continues to produce bright, lightweight and ergonomically optimized binoculars.

The new Elite is available in 8×43 and 10×43 versions. The new Elite is dramatically differently from the old. Gone is hard and slick rubber armoring, replaced by a finely grained pebbled surface that sticks to the hands. There are grooves for the fingers on the underside of the barrels. The next thing that is different is that the weight has been trimmed as well as the size. It now is a petite 4.75 inches wide, 6 inches tall and weighs only 24 ounces. The next big change is that they have gone from a single hinge that ran the length to a double bridge hinge. However they did keep a few things from the older versions. Such as they are still fully sealed, roof prised and nitrogen purged to be waterproof, fog proof and dust proof. Bushnell also has Rain guard coating on the exterior of the lens surface.

Leupold Binoculars are exceptional quality optics and precision instruments. Leupold’s corporate website is extraordinary. It is incredibly helpful, full of information and very user friendly. It was simple to compare different models and sizes, so I feel like I already have had them in my hands.
